Great list, Gerrie. Let me suggest one more, a newer book: The Killer of Little Shepherds: A True Crime Story and the Birth of Forensic Science, by Douglas Starr (2010). Doug uses the story of the French serial killer Joseph Vacher, active in the 1890s, to illustrate how the various scientific disciplines developed and came together, really for the first time, to investigate and convict a major criminal. Fascinating and well-written.
